'Anne hope was a woman of substance, an activist and a leader whose global impact will live forever.'

Mamphela Ramaphele

‘Anne Hope’s inner transformation mirrors her outward journey to free society from every form of oppression – a journey of faith, courage and deep humility. Stephanie Kilroe has captured an Anne that few of us knew but that all of us can learn from.’

Sister Janice McLaughlin, President of the Maryknoll Sisters

‘Anne Hope was a woman who was committed to living out love in many ways, and living that love with authenticity. Those who came close to her soon became aware of her vulnerability, of the price she paid for being true to her deepest instincts and calling.’

Father Donal Dorr, priest and theologian

Anne Hope is well known as president of the ecumenical lay community The Grail in South Africa, as co-founder of the acclaimed Training for Transformation programme for community development, and for her important work in the struggle against apartheid. Less is known about her dramatic and inspiring inner journey. Here, drawing on unique access to Anne’s diaries and prayer journals, Stephanie Kilroe sheds light on this previously hidden life and her struggle for freedom and wholeness in herself, in vocation, and in love.

Stephanie Kilroe is a writer and development worker, serving in the main vulnerable women and children, based in South Africa. She knew Anne for most of her life since first meeting her as a teenager in the early 1960s.
