Reading the Bible through Advent and Christmas

This book provides all that is needed for faithful reading of, and reflection upon, the word of God through the seasons of Advent and Christmas.

For each day – from the First Sunday of Advent, through readings for Christmas and the Epiphany, to the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord - the book presents the Scripture passages from the Old and New Testaments, including the Gospels, as guided by the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. The correct Sunday readings are supplied for years A, B and C.

Accompanying each reading a commentary is provided, and for each day suggestions for reflection and prayer. These accompaniments will help you read the Scriptures in the contemplative tradition of Lectio Divina, open to hearing the living word speak to you.

The Scripture readings are from the Revised New Jerusalem Bible, edited by Dom Henry Wansbrough OSB. It is a vibrant new translation, building on the Jerusalem Bible tradition and enriched by the latest biblical scholarship.
